| Career Summary |
|
During my university training, I was employed by a psychologist in private practice, and
developed skills in the area of vocational assessment and recruiting. Although this was
interesting work, I elected to undertake specialised training in the area of clinical
neuropsychology. I could also see the benefits of combining the two skills areas.
At the completion of my formal training, I moved to Brisbane to focus my energy on working in
the area of clinical neuropsychology. I was employed for six years in the public hospital
system, as a clinical neuropsychologist. This included positions at the Royal Brisbane
Hospital and Greenslopes Repatriation Hospital, and has included work in acute neurological,
neurosurgical, geriatric, psychiatric, rehabilitation and general medical units.
During those years, I also developed my private practice. Work in this area has come from a
variety of sources, including the medicolegal arena, neurological and neurosurgical services
as well as rehabilitation and employment agencies. Since 1996 I have worked exclusively in
private practice.
My practise is devoted to providing high quality psychological assessments in a wide range of
areas. The assessment and report writing skills learned in neuropsychology are applicable to
a wide range of psychological presentations.
With regards to professional organisations, I am a past Chairperson of the Queensland Section
of the College of Clinical Neuropsychologists (
Australian Psychological Society).
In addition, I served as the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Education (which is a
committee of the National Executive of the APS College of Clinical Neuropsychologists) for four
years. This committee was responsible for the execution of the College's alternative system
of entry, the Entry by Examination System. I also served as the National Chairperson of the
APS College of Clinical Neuropsychologists from 2001-2005.

June 1996 to Current, Private Practice
I offer a comprehensive neuropsychology service to both adults and children, from a variety of
areas. Referral sources include the medical profession, rehabilitation and employment providers
and the legal profession. A comprehensive assessment and report is always the goal. I have also
been involved in the Comprehensive Epilepsy Unit at the Wesley Private Hospital.
The majority of the referrals are now medicolegal in nature. I apply a clinical hypothesis
testing approach. I prefer to see fewer patients and examine them very thoroughly, typically
using both neuropsychological and personality measures. Where necessary vocational assessments
are also utilised.
In recent years I have also been engaged by a large commercial organisation to use psychological
and personality measures to assist in selection of candidates for responsible positions.
April 1993 to June 1996, Royal Brisbane Hospital
The Royal Brisbane Hospital offered a variety of challenges for the clinical neuropsychologist.
Its neurological and neurosurgical units are very busy, and I was required to assess a wide
variety of disorders. In particular, a large amount of patients who have experienced head
injuries are seen. Some particular areas which I sought to develop include: management of mild
head injury / post concussional syndrome, assessment of patients for surgery for the control of
epilepsy. In addition, I have been involved in a large number of research projects, including
drug trials (anti-epileptics, head injury treatments).
April 1991 to April 1993, Greenslopes Repatriation Hospital
As a Clinical Neuropsychologist, I assessed patients with a variety of neurological disorders,
mainly in an ageing population.
December 1989 to April 1991, Royal Brisbane Hospital
Whilst in this position as sole neuropsychologist, I was required to undertake assessments of
patients with a variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Some liaison with treatment
teams and community services was also required. Five months of that period were also spent in
the position of Acting Senior Psychologist.
January 1987 to March 1987, Hillcrest Hospital Adelaide
I was required to collect data for a project supervised by a neuropsychologist, examining the
effects of computer-assisted intervention for the attentional deficits experienced in
schizophrenia.
1986 to 1989 (Part-Time), Behaviour Research Melbourne
This is a group of consulting clinical psychologists. My duties covered a wide range of
psychological services including both research and assessment. These included drink driving
offender rehabilitation programs and vocational assessment and psychological assessment for
personnel selection.
